I work 2 blocks from this place and it has changed hands several times over the years so i was stunned when i saw the raving reviews for this place. My son and i gave it a try tonight and we now have a new fav burger stop. The california burger is the best burger i have ever had. Thats saying alot, we frequent them all. The fries are those similar to apollo, atlantis and crown burger, and their burgers are similar. HOWEVER they add bacon (plus the standard pastrami) to their house burger and it is incredible. It wont disappoint. Lots of mentions about the fry sauce here and its justified. Reminds me of the training table sauce. They use a bit of bbq sauce instead of all ketchup. We will be back. Steer clear during weekday lunch (right across the street from west high) other than that you should be good.

OK, the California Burger with pastrami AND bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, and pickles on a wonderful sesame seed bun, was fantastic! I really couldn't find a flaw. They don't put as much pastrami on it as Crown, but frankly, that's kind of a good thing. The bacon was great. I've been back several times for a straight up BC combo. It confirmed my fandom (pic). The fries are my favorite kind. Medium cut. Crispy outside, soft inside. Piping hot. They had a free condiment bar. Always a plus. Housed in the same building as the thankfully defunct Molca Salsa, California Burgers is a real winner. If I was a West High student, I'd be hitting this place up for lunch a few times a week. They have other stuff beyond the various hamburger selections such as fried chicken strips, fried shrimp, fish sandwiches, onion rings, and even breakfast burritos. it all looked good to me, but I doubt I'll ever get any of it. Really, this place serves a great burger. MC Free officially recommends it.

I work close by and had been meaning to try this place for awhile, wish I had sooner! I've been several times now and have yet to be disappointed. Seems to be run by a family cooking up fresh food in a friendly environment. Their pastrami rivals the competition! Give this place a try, may be my favorite burger joint in the valley now. But don't think they just serve burgers, they have a selection of delicious fresh sandwiches as well (I really liked the french dip).

For a $ burger joint it gets a solid 5 stars. Get the Bulgogi burger and eat it in front of your goofy Utah paleo friends.

I love this place! The California burger is a pastrami burger with bacon and it is amazing... even better than the famous crown burger little more than a block from them. There I said it! Their fry sauce is tasty too and if you don't want a burger, my wife loves the turkey sandwich.

Decent burger place. Good prices. Comparable with Apollo or Crown, but far friendlier. I will frequent again.

The teryaki chicken sandwich was off the hook! Its close to work so I go there every once in a while to change it up.

Their fries are cheap, and they give you a ton. Fry sauce is amazing, has a different spice to it. Burgers have always been great. Plus, they will drive you to and pick you up from the Jazz game with a $10 food purchase. Neat.

I love mom and pops burger joints this place has a great burgers and philly cheese steak sandwiches. The fries were hot. Now if they could get better tables and chairs this place would rock!!!

Decent food, disappointing portions: I got the $7 (after tax) jalapeño cheesesteak sandwich. The meat was lacking, but hot; and the sautéed jalapeños, onions, and mushrooms seemed fresh. Unfortunately, a skinny 6- or 7-inch cheesesteak is pretty wimpy and I left hungry. Friendly employees, slow service: The staff I interacted with were great, but the service was pretty slow considering I went early and was one of the only customers. I'll assume it took time to slaughter, butcher, and cook the steak...all for a better sandwich...but don't stop here if you're in a hurry, or there are more than a few customers because it might be awhile. This first experience was a 3+ for me, mainly because the flavor was pretty good (a little overpriced in my opinion, but good). I might give them another shot because they're close, but I may have to order double next time so I can leave satisfied.

Meh. I went here because a bunch of people kept telling me it was the best burger in Salt Lake, but I honestly didn't think it was all that special. The fry sauce was definitely different from the regular ketchup + mayo fry sauce you get at the other places, but I'm not sure that's necessarily a good thing. There wasn't anything bad about it. There also wasn't anything particularly great about it. Not really worth driving out of your way for, but perfectly fine if you're around the neighborhood. That said, I didn't have the signature California burger. I just had a regular burger and fries, so maybe that's why I don't understand. But again, not driving all the way over there for it. I'll probably stick to Apollo/Crown/whatever they're called.

California Burger takes burgers up a couple notches. The Bulgogi Burger is great, as are the 2 (3 if you're lucky) onion rings that come with the special. To top it off, California Burger has added an extra zing to their fry sauce--love it! Tip: if you have less than a HUGE appetite, split an order.

LOVE this place!! The food is always amazing and the staff is super friendly. The owner is usually working. He's really nice and always remembers me. The place is always clean. The food takes a little bit longer because they make it when you order but it is totally worth the 5-10min wait. Fries, burgers, subs, shakes, etc-- everything I've tried, all great!! No complaints about the food. The only downside to this place is that they are closed on Sundays. But hey, it's utah.

  • Nate S.

Here it is. I'm saying it. No going back. Laying it all down. Henceforth the calendar will mark Before Burger Proclamation and After Burger Proclamation: The California Burger is superior to the Crown Burger.

I suppose you could call this fast food. The lady in the back is lightning speed as she slings out burger after succulent burger. The meat is unassumingly good--no frills, just classic flavors coupled with the perfectly fried/seasoned and equally unassuming potatoes. But the menu isn't limited to what you could get at every other burger joint. There are exotic flavors in the mix--bulgogi burger--and classic staples like chili dogs and corn dogs. The only thing fast about this is the speed at which the gratification will hit you. Great food, friendly service, smiles for miles!

Got the California Burger---which has Pastrami on it. I'm from California - but never had a pastrami burger til I got to Utah. (In California, a California burger usually has avocado). 1st bite - underwhelming 2nd bite - this could be good 3rd bite - aw this is good. before the 6th bite - remove the tomato 7th bite - wow without that tomato that pastrami is really good (& I don't like pastrami) 12th bite - uh my stomach 15th bite - can't eat any more 16th - 20th - left burger unfinished due to a perceived impending stomach eruption. Fries are good. The fry sauce is good tangy. but these kind of fries are better with straight ketchup. Over all an a-ok burger Also be sure to remember to SMILE because YOU'RE ON CAMERA. (And any incriminating evidence will be turned over to West High Security. :))

There's very little in this world that I love more than a divey burger joint. And while this place isn't too much of a dive, actually, it's still got that feel to it. And that's a good thing--a great thing, really. In addition to the standard burgers, which are standard but not mass-produced, you've got some interesting entrants. The obligatory pastrami burger (this is Utah, after all) and then some way-out-of-left-field Korean-inspired burgers. The owner, who is terribly nice, is Korean and there's a little bit of home in this burger. Give it a try for something different. What would a local burger joint be without fried stuff? They've got the fried stuff covered with regular fries, rings, zucchini, mushrooms, and I want to say jalapeños or perhaps okra...my memory fails me. Just know that the fried goods keep on coming. When it comes time for dessert, don't forget about the Flavorburst ice cream. Sure, this is a gimmick, but I've fallen for it. Flavorburst is a soft serve ice-cream add-on that puts a brightly-colored line of flavoring on the outside edge of each band of ice cream that goes on your cone. There are a variety of flavors available and the finished product is artificially-sweetened glory. The only drawback to this place is the location--not the neighborhood, but rather its proximity to the high school. It's overrun with teenagers, and at the risk of sounding like the "Get off my lawn" guy, they really don't treat the place well. The poor employees must fight a battle of kids coming in, messing it up, not buying anything, and otherwise making life a headache. I've seen them do this--order one small order of fries for the whole table, leave napkins around, make a mess, and then get up and leave. I'm calling you out, West High School--you're better than that!

This is about as good as it gets for a fast food burger. I don't have anything to add that hasn't been mentioned in other reviews, but here are the high points: excellent food, a clean dining area, and a lot of options on the menu. The owner (who works in the restaurant six days a week), is also very nice and obviously takes a lot of pride in his work. There are a lot of burger joints in Salt Lake, but do not overlook this place! PS: Best. Fry. Sauce. Ever.

  • Bradley S.

It's nice to go to a fast food place that isn't a chain (at least to my knowledge). And even if it is, it's a refreshing one. Calm atmosphere and food was brought to my table. They do only allow 1 free refill from their drink machine which I wasn't a fan of. I went during the summer, but it is right next to West High school. So avoid going during lunch hours during the school year! It doesn't hold that many people, and with high school kids that could be a nightmare. The food was good. I got the philly cheesesteak. Usually I wouldn't, I'd get a burger. But it was good nonetheless. Nice melted cheese and good meat. The bread was nice and soft, and it was a good meal. The fries were great and so was the sauce. It was a good experience!

  • Ayley J.

This place gets bonus points for having those rad flavor burst cones. Eating in this restaurant is a little awkward so we usually get food to go and eat it outdoors. Places that have fry sauce this good are places worth visiting.

    (5)
  • Ryan T.

Excellent burger. This was definitely an unexpected find and cannot wait to go back again to explore the menu more. And yes the fry sauce is amazing.

    (5)
  • Brooks S.

Flavorful. Satisfying. Unique. The burgers are better than Crown burger down the street. Their California Burger is worth waiting in their drive thru and during their lunch rush which is mostly West High School students. There's no comparison to fast food burgers you just have to try it.

    (5)
  • Alicia G.

Yes, the burgers are very good. They have a great turkey sandwich, too. But I can't believe there are so few mentions of their bulgogi! Their Korean BBQ is the best in town. No kidding. Ejo has NOTHING on California Burgers! Order the bulgogi on your burger and get the pastrami burger's better-tasting cousin. Or, try the bulgogi bowl with brown rice and veggies. The bowl is affordable, filling and mouthwatering. The Bottle Tops (tempura jalapenos) are delicious. Add the special dipping sauce--which might be BBQ sauce and mayo--and you've got a 5-star meal for under $10.

  • Jackson P.

This place always amazes me. The staff is super friendly and the food is worth driving across the city/state/country. what more could you ask for?

  • Brian B.

I've been back here several times now and I can attest that all their food is very good. I've had the Cali burger a couple times, cheeseburger, Bulgogi burger, mushroom burger and Philly cheesesteak. All have been very good. Still love the fry sauce too. A little goes a long way for me, but it's really superb. They have a tendency to want to put mayo, fry sauce and American cheese on burgers so be sure to tell them what you want on it if you want it made differently.

    (5)
  • Gideon C.

Burgers and fries delivered straight from the heavens. I tried the signature california burger topped with mouthwatering pastrami and perfectly cooked bacon and fell in love. Top that off with their crispy on the outside fluffy on the inside fries and you have a recipe for a great meal. I've been back several times and am yet to be dissapointed. Next time your hankering for a burger pass up your normal choices and check this place out, you won't regret it.

I don't get it, I guess. I drove past a Crown to get here. Crown's parking lot and restaurant was full. Neither was here. Lots and lots of signs about students and how many fry sauces come with a meal and how much it is to get more, which are not things Crown does. Crown, in fact, offers pumps. Several of them. Have as much of that damn gloppy mess of a sauce as you want. Slather it all over yourself. Whatever. Perhaps a direct comparison might not be fair, but it is reasonable, given that they are within 3 blocks of each other. Further, the California Burger appears to be taking aim at the signature burger of Crown, so, in that light, let's just do it that way. As to those signature burgers, both are inferior without modification. Whereas both need to drop onions, Crown needs to also let loose of their crappy fry sauce and replace it with straight mayo. This one features some very token pastrami, weak bacon and needs to lose about half of the lettuce, given how very thin the patty is. In fact, I frequently struggled to find the flavor of the burger itself. This is a far cry from dethroning the reigning king, ultimately. They do, however, offer fried jalapeno rings, so good there. They also have the flavor burst ice creams, but that seems like more of an occasional thing. The interior, in addition to all the off-putting signs (smile, you're on camera), was also dirty, making this a not very comfortable place to spend time. They did have some interesting (their bulgogi sauce is a miss) menu selections (though the menu itself is in dire need of replacement) and if I was in the area, would at least consider them again...ahhh, who am I kidding? I don't need to sit somewhere with borderline hostile hand-scrawled signs on photocopy paper plastered literally everywhere and I damn sure don't need to do it with their crappy drink selection, particularly when 3 blocks away, I can enjoy a Coke Freestyle machine. I don't need to go to a restaurant where patrons have to trade sauces in those little Dixie cups if they didn't get the correct one the first time or dig for pocket change if it happens after they've paid for the order. Definite one and out.

Salad looks amazing but the lady at the front counter was anything but pleasant and inviting. When I walked up to the counter and greeted her, she literally nodded her head and stared at me. No "hello" or anything. Strange.

  • Eric W.

Very impressed with the price to value ratio! The Blue Bacon burger was delicious! Stay away during the school months if you don't like hanging out with high schoolers as this place is right next to a high school and gets overrun.

  • Dustin S.

Maybe I just went on a bad day, but I was not as impressed as others. Granted it is better than any other fast food joint like BK, but I'd label California Burger lower than Crown, Hires, and Lucky 13. The big difference to me is the quality of meats, mine came with pastrami that was very fatty and with tendon, the burger was overcooked and pretty dry, the bun was nicely toasted, with relatively fresh greens.. As for the fries, they were nice and crisp, but I'm not a fan of fry sauce mixed with bbq sauce, such as theirs. I'd go back, but would prefer other joints for a burger

Everything about this place is fun. The diverse people that work here are open and friendly to a tee. Not going to lie though, I was a bit over whelmed by all my options there. I know they are famous for their burgers (which I ate and loved) but they also had a choice of gyros, deli sandwiches, teriyaki chicken bowls, smoothies, breakfast, hot dogs and 3 kinds of fries. My only complaint was that it was cold inside while we waited for our food. I'm a picky person when it comes to temperature though Our food was made quickly then brought to us, which I thought was nice because typically they call out your order from the counter. Food was so good!!! My hubby and I downed a single burger, a double burger, a gyro, sweet potato fries and onion rings. It all tasted amazing!!! I have never been to crown burger, and will never need to.

  • Jed D.

What a horribly cheap breakfast burrito. Taste like something made in a microwave. You seriously could make this at home, and it would be a thousand times better, even if you used a microwave.

    (2)
  • Ameilia Q.

This place is pretty good. I would not say they are the best burgers in town (but that is reserved for Lucky 13) but they are good. I would say they are comparable to Crown Burger, but not better than Crown. The best thing about this place is probably their fry sauce... it has a BBQ kick to it which is quite delicious. Definitely a place to stop by if you are near, but not one to go out of your way to find.

    (4)
  • Nate M.

I can't recommend this place highly enough. Their burgers come a lot tastier than crown burger hands down, and for less money. But their fries are always remarkably crisp and when dipped in their fry sauce...words fail me. Just absolutely incredible. I've taken several friends and family members here and ALL of them have wanted to come back for more. Only complaint is that the interior decor could use a makeover as it's a little bland with the colors, but apart from that I've got nothing but positives about this place.

    (5)
  • David T.

Food is always fresh and the owner is very nice. Been a few times and is consistent. Be aware that since they make it fresh it isn't fat but it's worth it. Also it might be best not to go during school lunch but even then they take good care of you as quick as they can.

    (5)
  • Robert S.

Service is slow, which is always aggravating when you've been waiting for 25 minutes for a burger and fries and 4 people who came in after you are served before you - one of which ordered the same thing. Decor is a strange mix of mismatching standalone tables and fixed bench tables. None of them were clean though. Food took 45 mins and was decent, although the fries were soggy and the fry sauce was pretty standard. Probably won't come here again.

    (2)
  • Joe T.

this place is great. The California burger is excellent and the fry sauce is the stuff dreams are made of. I'm not sure where they get their bacon but I have no doubt it's made by wizards While I pride myself in my trying to visit lots of different places I make an exception for California burger. I'm here every week at least once.

    (5)
  • Paul D.

The California Burger is one of the best I've had, anywhere. Fries are just OK. The ketchup and mayo "fry sauce" is delicious. Not the cleanest place ever, but not unclean either. Will go again next visit.

    (4)
  • B M.

Solid burger. Definite contender with the Crown down the street. The staff(owners most likely) very courteous. The place is clean with lots of light.

    (4)
  • Ruben A.

The other reviews pretty much say it all. I got the pastrami burger with fries and it was really good. Great value for the price. Kind of a long wait sometimes, though.

    (4)
  • Sara B.

Their Fry Sauce is the bomb! Some of the best I've had. They forgot my drink the first time I went, but the second time they made up for it with delicious onion rings. Good hang over cure ;-)

  • Ian R.

California burger is one of my favorites! The bulgolgi burger and the spring chicken burrito are must tries. So yummy, and the sauce on each is amazing. The prices are just out of this world cheap, too. I love supporting local businesses and I will definitely be back to California Burger!

    (5)
  • Keith C.

Though this is a strong statement, it's no stretch to say this is my favorite burger place on the planet earth. Better than crown burger hands down and it's cheaper! Their specials are incredibly reasonable. :). If people who go to crown burger discovered this place it'd go out of business for sure!

    (5)
  • Rich G.

The atmosphere is very casual inside, but not quite a dive. The service was quick and fairly personable. Definitely much better than the big 3 Chainz meaning McDonald's Burger King and Wendys. The burger here is very much on par with crown burgers. The French fries are very similar the burgers taste similar but are about 30 percent less in price for the total meal. P lookin for a great burger at a price lower than Crown Apollo and Astro burgers this is the place! This was my first time here and I was very impressed.

    (4)
  • Carol Yiran Q.

Yes, I'm not gonna lie, the burger is really good. HOWEVER, there are two things that made me pretty upset. First, I went to the drive thru, I waited in front of the menu for more than three minutes, and said hello for like more than ten times, but no one answered. So I had to park my car and went inside to get my food. And the SECOND thing I don't like about this place is the atmosphere. They serve a lot of midschoolers/highschoolers during lunch hour. It's not that I have anything against teenagers, but those kids were super loud, and they were playing music out loud too. The owner kinda had to yell at them to make them turn the music down. The ten minutes I spent there was a total disaster. To be fair, maybe it's better around dinner time or on weekends. Who knows. In conclusion, the food was good, at least I liked their California burger. But the experience in general was pretty bad, and I'm prolly not gonna go back again.

    (3)
  • Charles S.

This is a pretty solid burger joint. I had the namesake burger and fries. Probably ranks 4 stars, but I have to minus 1 star for soggy bacon, bland pastrami and the $9 price tag for a burger, fries and a drink. For $9, I can get a much better burger combo at many other places... and usually for less $$.

    (3)
  • Keith R.

California Burger Was Good fry sauce is the best I've tried since 2012 but they forgot my drink so 4 stars for them! GO TRY IT!

  • Randy O.

I work for a local tv station just up the street from California Burger. I had to work late and was looking for someplace different to try. I checked out yelp and noticed this place had great reviews. I decided to give it a shot. Now, let me just say, I absolutely LOVE a good burger. I ordered the California Burger and fries...and was blown away at how good this burger was. They don't hold back on the meat at all. I loved the thickness of the pastrami and bacon and hamburger. Combined with the red onion slices, the toasted bun and the sauce, I was in HEAVEN! The generous helping of fries were nice and hot and the barbeque fry sauce put me over the top! I can't believe this place has been here for 3 years and I haven't eaten here before. I left knowing that I would be back...and I have, in fact, been back...to the tune of 3 times this past week, each time trying something different, all with the same results...the food is FANTASTIC! I have had to wait for my food, but no longer than 5 - 10 minutes and very much worth the wait. I just returned after having gone to eat with one of my co-workers. He had never eaten there before and he ordered the Bulgogi Burger and he was equally impressed as well. The price you pay for all you get is an absolute bargain in my opinion. If you are looking for a great place to eat and haven't tried this place, I would HIGHLY recommend that you swing on by California Burger. GREAT FOOD, GREAT PRICE, GREAT EXPERIENCE!

  • Frank M.

This place glanced at the playbook of Apollo, Crown and Astro Burger and just made a version of their own. But instead of a bunch of cheap Greeks, this place is run by an Asian man. He 9 year old son was working the drive through. Not kidding. Just like Apollo, this food was heavy, greasy, and good. It satisfied my needs. Which was to consume, heavy, greasy, good food. Stop by, I think you'll enjoy.

  • Sanicia A.

Absolutely delicious! Hamburgers are great. The fry sauce is made in house and is excellent. I've also had the Philly with jalapeños, and that is super good. Great burger joint. I love that it's locally owned. The owner is great. Real friendly. Awesome daily specials. Soft serve ice cream, which I love! I definitely recommend this place to everyone!

  • Anne Marie S.

I never had a California Burger and need to go back for another one. WOW , so good and tasty. Had the onion rings and that was pretty tasty too. This is a pretty new place and nice location. its a bit off the beaten path but not too far off. Gotta go back!

  • Cris A.

I love this place! The food is delicious and the service is great. The owner is very friendly. I dislike the fact that so many West High students treat the place like crap. They leave trash about and try to get away with free drinks using their own cups and/or sharing with all their friends. They should have more respect, but I guess teens are teens. The soft serve is delicious, though I rarely have any room left in my stomach after eating. Try the Bulgogi burger!

  • Tyson H.

Move over Crown Burger, California burger is the new Jazz game night burger spot!!! This place is AWESOME! I would not be surprised if this little mom and pop shop puts west high cafeteria out of the lunch business all together! I've tried numerous things on the menu and have not been disappointed with anything really other than the breakfast burrito. Too many peppers, not enough eggs and meat. But aside from that all of the burgers are delicious! My favorite is the chef's special bulgogi burger; it'll make an onion fan out of any onion hater. The pastrami burgers are scrum. The ranch burger is delish. The chipotle burger is a nice burger with a little kick. The thing that this place has going for them is the FRY SAUCE, and the 'basket'. Make sure you order whatever you get in the 'basket' instead of just the combo. The 'basket' comes with the same amount of fries and then two delicious golden onion rings for the same price. The fry sauce in my opinion is better than Crown, Astro and Apollo burger combined. The bread on the Philly cheese steak sandwich was excellent, and the teriyaki/ bulgogi beef bowls are an excellent price for the value as well. Try anything there and I promise you that you'll return for round two! Keep up the awesome work Cali burger!

Great place to eat! Crown burger has some competition. Got the jalapeño burger with blue cheese and it was awesome! Great deals too!
